STAR Cruises, a leading
cruise line in Asia-Pacific, has constructed its
own fully-fledged simulation centre at its
headquarters in Port Klang.
The centre features a US$5mil ship simulator
that provides training on all aspects of ship
handling, bridge management, advanced onboard
emergency and safety procedures.
Senior vice-president of marine operations Capt
Gustaf Gronberg said simulator training was
vital to achieve high standards of bridge
operation and safety procedures.
Rather than a standard simulator, the training
facility has been custom-built to the design of
the bridge on the cruise line's own ships.
Upon completion of the training, the crew would
continue the exercise onboard the SuperStar
Virgo to observe experienced bridge team
management in action.
The Port Klang simulation centre also trains
harbour pilots from around the region, including
many from different ports in Malaysia.
The simulator can also be used in port
development projects, including studies of
approaches and channels. The company has carried
out this type of work in China, Hong Kong,
Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The simulator has also helped the company to
assist other cruise liners' ships to determine
the maximum conditions in which it is safe to
bring ships into the terminal.
Chief operating officer Chong Chee Tut said as
the pioneer in the industry in this region, the
company would continuously uphold the highest
standards of practice in terms of training to
ensure the entire fleet had the best-qualified
force for the safety of all its guests.
