Northport breaks two records

Northport (M) Bhd recently performed two record-breaking feats with its cranes.

The first record-breaking feat was achieved by using three Northport cranes to move 586 containers in eight hours - deem as one working day.

The second record-breaking feat was achieved by using one Northport crane (crane 11) to move 350 containers within the same time.

Crane 11, equipped with a twin-list spreader had achieved this record- breaking feat on Dec 5 on the ship - Ocean Promise, berthed at the port container terminal 1.

Ocean Promise is a ship with 2,247 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity.

Northport management had said they were currently focussing on driving-up productivity to meet maritime global standards.

Northport recently took delivery of a few bigger cranes - the super post panamax gantry cranes - to handle ultra size container ships (with carrying capacity over 8,500 TEUs) that dock at the port.

The new super post-panamax cranes located at Container Terminal 3 arrived last month.

The super post-panamax cranes would be commercially operational by year-end at Northport - the port with arguably the most extensive spread of shipping connectivity among Malaysian ports.

The new cranes would help increase the total shipside gantry cranes of Northport to 27 (including eight super post-panamax cranes).

The new cranes have an outreach of 18 containers wide and 25% stronger lifting power than existing cranes.
