The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has
started construction of a complex in Sedili
here.
Its southern region commander First Admiral Che
Hassan Jusoh said that work on the RM11.5mil
complex began last week and was expected to be
completed in a year.
He said the Fishery Development Authority of
Malaysia (LKIM) had provided 3,285 sq m of land
for the purpose.
“The project includes a jetty, a administration
centre, a 24-hour operations centre and an area
for maintenance of boats,” he said.
“It is not easy to obtain land for such purposes
and we are grateful to LKIM for giving it to
us,” he said, adding that there were 32 maritime
complexes in the country.
He said that Sedili was chosen because of its
strategic location between Endau and Johor Baru.
Che Hassan was speaking at a press conference
during the agency’s southern region Hari Raya
Aidilfitri celebration here recently.
He said from Jan 1 to Oct 23, the agency handled
93 smuggling cases in the region compared to 86
last year.
“The top cases are those categorised under the
Fishery Act, Immigration Act and Customs Act,
including smuggling of diesel and timber,” he
said.
Che Hassan said the agency had performed 1,475
days of sea patrols and 2,205 inspections until
Oct 23.
He encouraged junior officers to learn from
senior ones who had more experience at sea.
“This Hari Raya celebration is a good time for
new officers to boost their relationship with
their seniors,” he said. |
