All eight Westports Malaysia
Sdn Bhd gate lanes will be equipped with
weighbridges starting this week to support the
implementation of the three-day free storage
period for containers on Jan 1.
Previously, only four of Westports’ gate lanes
had weighbridges.
Customer service manager Mohd Ali Abdul Hussain
said this would enhance the efficiency of the
port whereby hauliers could send in the
containers faster.
“We will also improve the gate system to cater
for the dual transactions of import and export
in the first quarter of next year,” he said at
the briefing and dialogue session entitled
Reduction in free storage period: Are we ready
for Jan 1, 2009? organised by the Federation of
Malaysian Manufacturers last week.
Currently, hauliers that bring export containers
have to travel back to the gate or mini booth at
shed E for a second transaction to pick up
import containers.
According Mohd Ali, other future developments
included the setting up of other government
agencies’ counters at the business centre
together with the Customs office.
“Working towards a paperless and speedier port
operation, Westports has already implemented a
smart card security system for faster import and
export clearance, online inspection declaration
and online approval for containers since
September,” he said. |
