PKA sticks to 10pc throughput decline target

The Port Klang Authority (PKA) maintains its target of a 10 per cent decline in container throughput this year, despite seeing a much worse 15.4 per cent fall in the first half of the year.

Northport (Malaysia) Bhd and Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd collectively handled 7.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2008.

PKA general manager Kee Lian Yong said this is due to the improved container throughput numbers that the ports in Port Klang have been seeing in the last two months.

"With the indication of some economic recovery and the gradual upturn in the shipping industry, we expect to recover from this downturn and fare better next year as the overall global economic trend changes for the better," Kee said.
